The other night, my roommate was showing me this website that will sell t-shirts for you and take a big percentage of the cost for selling the shirts. I think his t-shirt cost $24 dollars to buy and for every t-shirt that was sold he would receive $1. Now this doesn't sound like anything new, however my roommate was putting his Twitter name and some of the hashtags that he uses on the t-shirts.
For a little background, my roommate has one of the obnoxious Twitters where he tweets his stream of conscious; regardless if they are good thoughts or bad (it's definitely not the most professional Twitter that we have talked about in class). However, he has something like over 700 followers and his goal is to get over 2000. For him, he uses his Twitter rather than a promotional tool, but more for a social presence. From what it sounds like, it sounds like he is trying to brand his Twitter. As you probably would have guessed, he is marketing his t-shirts through his Twitter.
Personally, I think it was a waste of his night making a bunch of t-shirts that no one will sell. Maybe I'm wrong and he's going to be throwing hundred dollar bills in my face, but I doubt it. What do you guys think?
I would think a shirt with a more generic design may sell better. Such as a shirt with a goofy picture or a funny slogan would appeal to a larger spectrum of customers. All you're roommate has to hope for is that 24 people like his idea and he walks away from this situation with a free shirt. It is not something that I would participate in, but I could understand why someone would do it.
ReplyDeleteI don't quite see his intention with the t-shirts, is he looking to promote his twitter with shirts and gain followers and recognition? if so how will he get outsiders to find the shirts and subsequently follow him. Or is he using the twitter to sell shirts and make the dollar per shirt from volume? I don't really understand his end game, and I personally don't think its that great of an idea. I don't really see how it gets him followers, and on the other side, even if he sells a shirt to every follower (which he won't) he's making about $700, which is nothing to sneeze at but seems small for the effort.
ReplyDeleteSeems like a lot of dedication to me... I think it is an interesting idea to have t-shirts with different funny hashtags to try to market his twitter. It definitely is a quick way to make cash it seem like! it will be interesting to see how many people buy it.
ReplyDeleteI think that if you put extremely popular things that are trending on facebook onto a shirt with the hashtag on the fron they would deffinitly sell, but only if you can get the general public to see the shirts. Its all about getting the word out about the shirts and having that audience like what the shirt has to offer.
